Travel in Style: Create a Versatile Capsule Wardrobe
How to Create the Perfect Mix and Match Wardrobe
A travel capsule wardrobe is your secret weapon! This guide will show you how to create a versatile capsule that fits perfectly in your carry-on or backpack, allowing you to mix and match outfits for effortless style throughout your trip.
Step 1: Consider Your Luggage
Before you start, think about your luggage situation. Will you be using a backpack, a carry-on suitcase, or checked luggage? When choosing your capsule wardrobe be mindful it needs to fit into whichever bag or suitcase you’ll be bringing.
For example, when we go sailing our luggage needs to be soft-sided and collapsable so I use a foldable duffle bag for easy storage under the floorboard.
Step 2: Choose Footwear for Function and Fashion
- Select 2-3 pairs of shoes based on the weather and activities you have planned. Consider versatile options like sneakers (The Most Comfortable White Sneakers Post) for exploring, sandals for warmer climates, and a dressier option for evenings out.
Step 3: Bottoms for Every Occasion
- Pack 2-4 bottoms that can be easily mixed and matched, depending on the length of your trip. Think pants, skirts, capris, or shorts in neutral colors and wrinkle-resistant fabrics that are also lightweight.
Step 4: Tops that Work Together
- Choose 4-8 tops in coordinating colors and styles. Pack a mix of sleeveless, short-sleeved, and long-sleeved options to adapt to different climates. You need to match all tops with the bottoms so they can all mix & match for the most part.
Step 5: Layering Pieces for Versatility
- Don’t forget 1-3 layering pieces like a blazer, jean jacket, or button-up shirt. These can add warmth, style, and can even double as a swimsuit cover-up.
Step 6: Essential Accessories
- Pack light on accessories, choosing a few key pieces that can elevate your outfits. Think sunglasses, a hat, jewelry, scarves, bows, headbands, belts, etc. to style your looks
Bonus Tip: Leave room in your capsule for essentials like pajamas, undergarments, and a swimsuit. These don’t typically factor into the core capsule wardrobe. Also, read my tips for your travel day outfit below the video.

Travel Day Uniform
My last outfit will be the one I wear on travel days through the airport. I have a sort of travel uniform that I like to wear. The clothes you choose for this should be comfortable, functional, easy to use the tiny airlplane without any trouble. I like to include either my denim jacket (with outside and inside pockets) or my lululemon Effortless Jacket with 2 outside zipper pockets for phone and passport, as well as 2 inner pockets for lip gloss and tissues.
